KC Chiefs Go With Safe Pick In 2016 Mock Draft
By Scott Dillon
Round 7 – Pick 217: Kennan Reynolds (Running Back, Navy)
Here we are at the last pick of the draft. This pick was probably a reach as I didn’t go with the best available player at a position of need. This was a ‘fut feeling’ pick all the way.
Keenan Reynolds rushed for over 4,500 yards in his career. He also set the career record for rushing touchdowns with 88. He did both of these things as a quarterback for the Navy Midshipmen.
While it’s evident that Navy runs a triple-option which would allow a quarterback to run the ball more frequently than other programs, he was a fairly efficient passer was well. He only threw 31 touchdowns but also only threw eight interceptions. He totaled over 4,000 yards through the air.
It will be interesting to see if Reynolds can transition to the NFL as a running back, but his stats are very similar to those of Brad Smith‘s. Brad Smith didn’t have a great NFL career, but you would take the production he did have from a seventh-round pick. See what CBS Sports had to say about him here:
"But with his size (5-10, 200) and skill-set, Reynold’s best fit in the NFL is at running back, a position he has never played. However, with his experience as a ballcarrier in Navy’s option offense, the transition should go smoothly. And if Monday’s Shrine Game practice is any indication, Reynolds looks like a natural at the new position."
If Reynolds can adjust to a new role he could fill in as a running back, wide receiver, returner, and even take some snaps at quarterback in a crisis. The Chiefs have questions at running back with Jamaal Charles coming off his second ACL injury and Charcandrick West entering free agency. Spencer Ware is going to stick around but are the Chiefs ready to move on from Knile Davis?
