KC Chiefs Go With Safe Pick In 2016 Mock Draft
By Scott Dillon
Round 5 – Pick 150: Tajae Sharpe (Wide Receiver, Massachusetts)
Tajae Sharpe is a relative unknown, but has some big potential in the NFL. He’s not expected to make an impact right away, but is projected to have the means to turn into an effective NFL receiver.
Sharpe is coming out of his senior year at the University of Massachusetts. He led the nation in catches last year with 111. He also only dropped three passes out of a possible 114 targets. His ability to be a possession receiver may fit the Chiefs needs well.
According to NFL.com, he lacks speed down the sideline, but can still find success in all aspects of the position. See what they have to say about his upside:
"Has staccato footwork that works in his favor. Able to shake press coverage and get into routes quickly. Gets to top speed quickly. Plus route-runner with athleticism to sink hips and break routes off sharply. Can stutter, shift and sell complex routes to create doubt in cornerbacks. Worked outside and from slot and hit on almost the entire route tree. Reliable target who drew double teams. Scouts love his humble personality and eagerness to take coaching and get better. Supple hands are automatic when he has room to catch it. Has improved football IQ under current head coach and former NFL coach, Mark Whipple."
One scouting website, nfldraftgeek.com, compares Sharpe to Anquan Boldin! They seem to think he has the same mental and physical toughness that Boldin possessed.
Sharpe is a low risk fifth round option who could fill Jason Avant‘s role from 2015. He could play the role of fourth receiver for a season and play in the slot if he needs to. His ability to make catches could come in handy in third down situations.
