KC Chiefs: Grading The 2013 Draft
By Scott Dillon
While John Dorsey has done well so far in the 2014 and 2015 drafts, his first draft with the KC Chiefs in 2013 was not so prosperous.
The KC Chiefs and their general manager, John Dorsey, received high marks for their efforts in the last two drafts. Young players like Marcus Peters, Chris Conley, Albert Wilson, and Charcandrick West have had an impact already for the Chiefs.
His ability to pick up some talent in the late rounds was a big part of what earned him an ‘A’ grade in both the 2014 and 2015 drafts. 2013 was an entirely different story. 2013 was mostly a waste outside of the top two picks.
While two of the players have made an impact on the Chiefs, most of them haven’t even seen the field. Few are still with the Chiefs and some aren’t in football at all.
2013 wasn’t a complete bust for Dorsey. He did get Andy Reid in as the head coach. At least for now the revolving door that was the head coaching position seems to be steady.
He also made a trade that brought Alex Smith to Kansas City. Alex Smith has responded by leading the Chiefs to two different playoff berths, and winning the first playoff game for the Chiefs in over two decades.
While he was able to bring in some consistency with two established leaders, his recent knack for drafting good young talent just wasn’t present in 2013.
