Round 5 – Pick 153: Brandon Doughty (Quarterback, Western Kentucky)

The Chiefs drafting a quarterback? Really? Well, there were several reasons for why this pick was made in the fifth round of the draft.

  1. Chase Daniel is likely on his way out of Kansas City due to free agency, which leaves the backup quarterback spot vacant.
  2. Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray are the other two quarterbacks on the roster, so adding a third guy might not hurt.
  3. Brandon Doughty was the best available player when this pick rolled around, and for good reason.

Doughty could be a nice option for the future of Kansas City football and it’s absolutely worth taking a gamble on this kid. Yes, he plays for a smaller school, but his stats are pretty incredible and he could be a big steal in the draft.

If Doughty comes to Kansas City and sits behind Smith for four years, just imagine how lethal he could be once Smith departs.

Doughty threw for 5,055 yards in his senior season at Western Kentucky, and 48 touchdown passes. He threw 49 touchdown passes the year before, but for less yards (4,830). Doughty has already put up terrific numbers, but could he replicate that success in the pros? Not likely right away, which is why he could be a good option for Kansas City.

Alex Smith currently has four years left on his contract. By the time his contract is up, he’ll be 35 and likely be on the downslope of his career. If Doughty comes to Kansas City and sits behind Smith for four years, just imagine how lethal he could be once Smith departs (assuming he even does).

It could be like an Aaron RodgersBrett Favre situation in Green Bay, only not as elite obviously (although it would be nice if the Chiefs could bring up an elite quarterback).

While some might find this pick to be silly, I think it’s worth the risk. Welcome to Kansas City, Brandon.
