KC Chiefs: Grading the 2014 Draft
By Scott Dillon
Round Six: Zach Fulton
Grade: A
First of all, I jumped ahead a little bit here. I know I skipped Aaron Murray and the fifth round pick. The simple fact of the matter is that there isn’t enough information on Murray to give him a grade as of yet. So just to get it out of the way let’s give Murray a grade of: ‘INC’. Murray has been what I’ve expected so far, which is an adequate third-string quarterback. He’s got an accurate arm and could make a play for second-string next season, but until he earns playing time, this pick is ‘to be decided’.
It’s the first time in thirty years that a Chief’s sixth-round pick was named an opening day starter in 30 years.
Alright, enough talking about Eric Hosmer’s girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. Let’s move on the steal of a pick that Zach Fulton turned out to be.
Zach Fulton earned a starting job for the Chiefs in his rookie season. It’s the first time in thirty years that a Chief’s sixth-round pick was named an opening day starter in 30 years.
While Fulton spent most of his time in 2014 at right guard, he had to bounce around a bit in 2015. Fulton has proven to be versatile and could turn out to be an above-average lineman for the Chiefs for years to come.
Fulton had to fill the role of center for a couple of games for the injured Mitch Morse, Fulton did a phenomenal job. Playing a position that he’s had very little experience with, Fulton helped the Chiefs to their first playoff win in 22 years.
His ability to play new positions on the line with little to no down-tick in his performance is a home run of a pick for John Dorsey. Anytime you get a part-time player out of the sixth round, you did well. When you get a pivotal starter, you knocked it out of the park. Getting value deep in the draft is what helped the Packers all those years and Dorsey brought that ability with him. Well played sir.
