Number 6 Biggest Surprise Player for the Chiefs – Running Backs

This one is a little different, as it concerns not just one player, but two in Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West, the Chiefs’ two running backs in the last half of the 2015 season.

Look, it’s not easy to fill Jamaal Charles’ shoes. The guy is a legend in Kansas City, and it was always a known fact (or thought to be anyway) that if Charles went down, the Chiefs’ offense would be in deep trouble.

Both of these guys really stepped up to the plate when called upon, and it saved the Chiefs’ season.

Well, in week five of the 2015 season, Charles did go down with an injury. Rather than trot Knile Davis out each week in the starter spot, Reid elected to give Ware and West a shot, and the two became a nightmare duo at the running back position.

Originally the third running back on the depth chart behind Charles and Davis, West played in 13 total games and started nine of them. He had 160 carries for 634 yards and four touchdowns as well as 20 receptions for 214 yards and a receiving touchdown.

Ware played in 11 games and started two, but proved to be the power back of the tandem. He carried the ball 72 times for 403 yards and six touchdowns.

Both of these guys really stepped up to the plate when called upon, and it saved the Chiefs’ season. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with these two next season when Charles is back in the picture, but hopefully West and Ware will be able to make an impact in the running game and on the offense.
