KC Chiefs Biggest 2015 Disappointments – Number 3: Ben Grubbs

It’s no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs had one of the worst offensive lines at the end of the 2014 season. Alex Smith was constantly getting hit, rushed, or sacked, and the offensive line definitely cost the team some games that year.

While Grubbs can’t help that he sustained an injury that kept him out; he was still a disappointment because he was supposed to come in and immediately help this offensive line.

John Dorsey made an effort to fix the offensive line during last season’s free agency period. He traded a fifth-round pick to the New Orleans Saints for their Pro Bowl guard Ben Grubbs. It seemed like a great trade for the Chiefs, and even though it cost a draft pick, the Chiefs could use Grubbs’ experience on the line.

After having three straight healthy seasons in New Orleans, Grubbs came to Kansas City and only played in seven games. In fact, Grubbs was out for the season by the time the Chiefs turned things around, as his last game was against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week seven.

Kansas City placed Grubbs on injured reserve in December, but he sat out from week 8 (versus the Lions in London) and on. While Grubbs can’t help that he sustained an injury that kept him out, he was still a disappointment because he was supposed to come in and immediately help this offensive line.

Instead, the offensive line actually played better without him. That was not what the Chiefs traded for, and hopefully Ben Grubbs can jump back in next season and protect Smith’s left side.
