Everyone in Kansas City was pumped for a week two Thursday Night Football showdown with the Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium.

With both the Chiefs and Broncos sitting at 1-0, the stage was set for an epic battle between the two teams for the lead in the AFC West after only two weeks of play.

The Broncos had struggled to score in their week one showing with the Ravens, but won the game thanks to their stout defense. This seemed like a game the Chiefs could win, and fans were anxiously awaiting the opportunity to knock off the Broncos for the first time since the 2011 season, and for the first time since Peyton Manning joined them in 2012.

Instead, the Chiefs turned the football over five times and allowed the Broncos to comeback down 14 points. With the game tied in the final minute, Andy Reid tried to get cute with the play calling.

Rather than taking a knee to send the game to overtime, he elected to run the ball and Jamaal Charles ended up fumbling the ball and a Broncos defender recovered it and ran it back for the touchdown. That’s how the game ended, and it sucked.

At the time, I was pissed and knew this loss could stick with the team for awhile. I even wrote a piece about how Chiefs fans couldn’t have nice things and it’s very interesting looking back at that piece now (especially since the Royals won the World Series in November).

This game was brutal due to the last second loss, but it began the five game losing streak this team suffered that lasted through week six.
