The Bad: Defense

The KC Chiefs had one of the best defenses in the league all year round, but it sure didn’t look like it on Saturday against the Patriots. New England was able to put up points in every quarter, and like I mentioned on the first slide, it never really felt like the Chiefs were ever in this game.

One of the biggest problems was that the Chiefs couldn’t get any pressure on Tom Brady. They posted zero sacks in this game, and New England did a great job eliminating Kansas City’s pass rush.

On a similar note, the secondary didn’t do their part either. They couldn’t force any turnovers and also allowed Brady to throw for 300 yards, something they hadn’t allowed a quarterback to do all season long.

Their easy schedule down the stretch helped them get to the playoffs, but it didn’t help them prepare for it.

Brady threw for 302 yards and 100 of those yards were to wide receiver Julian Edelman, who was always making plays in this game. He finished the day with ten receptions off 16 targets.

The Chiefs defense also allowed Rob Gronkowski to have a hell of a day with seven receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns.

It was a poor showing from the Chiefs defense, but they hadn’t faced an offense like this since early on in the season. That was Kansas City’s problem in this one. Their easy schedule down the stretch helped them get to the playoffs, but it didn’t help them prepare for it.

Now the Chiefs have some tough decisions to make during the off season when it comes to who to sign for 2016. Eric Berry, Derrick Johnson, and Sean Smith are some of the key free agents hitting the market come March. Who will the Chiefs re-sign?
