Mizzou Football: Ranking the Five Best Quarterbacks All-Time
By Scott Dillon
Number Five: Corby Jones
Corby Jones never made it in the NFL and only started for two seasons for the Mizzou Tigers. While his passing numbers won’t jump off the page at you, Jones made his case using his legs.
Corby Jones played for the Mizzou football team from 1995-1998, and in 1997 he got his chance to start after splitting time his previous two seasons. He took advantage of his time as a starter in 1997 by leading the big 12 in total touchdowns, passer efficiency rating, and passing yards per attempt. Considering he did his damage with his legs, that’s not too shabby.
He helped lead the Tigers to a 7-5 record in his first full season as a starter. It was their first winning season in 13 years.
Corby Jones totaled 26 passing touchdowns in his career with a total passer efficiency rating of 119.6. He also threw for 18 interceptions. While those numbers don’t scream ‘Top Five’, it was his legs that made up the difference. Jones rushed to a 4.5 yards per carry average over his career. He amassed 2,533 yards and scored 38 touchdowns. He was just exciting to watch.
Corby Jones is also important to Mizzou Football history for another reason. He helped lead the Tigers to a 7-5 record in his first full season as a starter. It was their first winning season in 13 years. He followed up in 1998, by going 8-4 proving that the year before was no fluke.
Corby Jones meant a lot to the Tigers in 97 and 98. They wouldn’t have another winning season without him until 2003, when another quarterback with speed was in charge.
