Royals Rumors: Is Carlos Gonzalez on the Move
By Scott Dillon
Royals Rumors cropped up in December that linked the Royals to the Rockies outfielders. Do recent Rockies additions mean that one of them is on the move?
Yesterday, the Rockies signed free-agent outfielder Gerardo Parra to a three year deal. This gives the Rockies a fourth left-handed bat in the outfield and would appear to create a logjam. With the Rockies in full rebuilding phase, are they going to look to trade one of their outfield bats for something they desperately need in the form of a few pitching prospects?
The report that broke on mlbtraderumors.com back on December 11th indicated that a number of teams were interested in the Rockies outfielders and that they were listening to all offers. The Royals were one of those teams, but they’ve since signed Alex Gordon and may be less likely to pursue a trade at this time.
Not only do the Royals have some internal options to fill the hole in right field, they may be unwilling to trade away even more prospects from an already thinning pool in an attempt to find a right fielder. The haul it would take to acquire any of their outfielders would likely pry away top prospect Raul Mondesi or top pitching prospects Kyle Zimmer or Miguel Almonte.
If the Royals go that route, it is even more evident that they are committed to a repeat and are in ‘win now’ mode.
If the Royals go that route, it is even more evident that they are committed to a repeat and are in ‘win now’ mode. This doesn’t seem to fit Dayton Moore’s profile and he would most likely try and conserve the Royals’ ability to remain competitive in the future.
Let’s take a look at the three Rockies outfielders mentioned in these Royals rumors, and see if they’re worth the prospects they’d likely demand.
