Wade Davis

Whoever thought that Wade Davis would wind up being the key piece in the Myers-Shields trade is far more adept than I am at evaluating trades. Wade Davis has been nothing but dominant since he made his transition to the bullpen.

While any extension offer is a gamble, Davis is a risk worth taking for the Royals.

Davis is a little bit of a different animal in that he may be a free agent sooner than 2018 if the Royals choose not to pick up his 2017 option. Unless something disastrous happens it would be hard to believe he’s not worth every penny of his ten million dollar option for 2017.

Davis has posted a bWAR of 7.1 in his two years as the Royals lock down reliever. To put that number into perspective, he posted a bWAR of -2.1 during the 2013 campaign when he dabbled with being a starting pitcher.

Wade Davis will only be 32 entering the 2018 season and as more teams are leaning towards doing things the Royals’ way he should be highly sought after. If Wade Davis hit’s the open market, the KC Royals will have a hard time competing for his services. While any extension offer is a gamble, Davis is a risk worth taking for the Royals.

They’ve won with a dominant bullpen, no reason to flip the script now.
