KU Basketball: Jayhawks Prove That They are the Best Team in the Nation
Top-ranked KU basketball beat the second-ranked Oklahoma Sooners 109-106 on Monday to ultimately validate who the number one team in the nation is.
KU basketball has proved that they are the best team in college basketball at this point in the season, beating the number two team in the AP Poll rankings and the number one team in the Coach’s Poll in the Oklahoma Sooners.
The Jayhawks are not only my (and many others) vote for the best team in the NCAA, but they also are one of the most exciting teams as well, as they are averaging 89.8 points per game thus far this season. That is good for second in college basketball. With their depth, versatility, and skill, Bill Self’s team can score with the best of ’em, including Oklahoma’s star in Buddy Hield.
Hield had the game of his life Monday, putting up a career-high 46 points on multiple Jayhawk defenders. Wayne Selden Jr. and Frank Mason III were the two main defenders on him throughout the night and played well, but it just wasn’t enough to stop the most lethal scorer in the land.
Kansas was up for the task though as in the three overtime game they put up 109 points in front of a rockin’ crowd at Allen Fieldhouse and did it with multiple guys.
Selden had 21, Perry Ellis had 27, and Devonte’ Graham finished with 22 to lead the way for the Jayhawks. Each played a huge part in keeping us in the game beyond scoring the basketball showing their maturity from last season where Ellis was the only of the three who consistently could make that type of impact.
KU basketball improves their record on the season to 13-1 and their Big 12 record to 2-0 with Monday’s win. This was the best team that either team had played up to this point, which set up for the game to be a great one. Right now, they both should be the top two teams in the country and be in a constant battle for the Big 12 Conference.
Here’s what some of the Jayhawks said after the game via Twitter:
“Jan. 4 is too early for a game like this,” said KU’s Bill Self once the game was over. He’s right. His guys had to play a lot of minutes and he probably lost a couple years of his life on a game in early January. What a season Jayhawk fans appear to have in store for them this year.
These two teams will meet again on Feb. 13, in Norman, Oklahoma in what should be another fantastic game. Probably not as good as this one, but one can wish, right?
