So what’s wrong with him?

Simply put, his mechanics can be a mess at times. Hackenberg likes to be aggressive, but doesn’t always set his feet when doing so. This results in bad throws and interceptions. He’ll have to cut that out completely at the next level.

Similarly, his release isn’t as over-the-top as preferred, though his height likely makes that point moot. Like many tall quarterbacks his inconsistent mechanics lead to misthrows, particularly high ones. More of those will be interceptions at the next level.

I think the biggest thing that scares people about Hackenberg is his underwhelming numbers. His most productive season was under Bill O’Brien as a freshman. In that season Hackenberg posted career highs in yards, touchdowns, and completion percentage.

His completion percentage has fallen each year since then. I don’t think he’s entirely to blame for this.

Drops-college receivers can’t handle the heat on his throws at time- and especially poor offensive line play have hurt him. Hackenberg’s poor mechanics and footwork are partially to blame as well.
