KU Basketball Head Coach Rankings Number Five: Ted Owens
Ted Owens was the head man at Kansas for 19 seasons, from 1964-65 through 1982-83. He went 348-182 with the Jayhawks and won 369 games in his career, good for 152nd all-time.
Owens had a terrific career at Kansas, winning six conference championships appearing in two final fours, and winning one National Coach of the Year award. He was 170-96 in conference and lost one or fewer conference games five times.
He had just five losing seasons but unfortunately, three came in his last four seasons, it led to Owens being the only coach to be officially fired.
He coached three Consensus All-Americans (Walt Wesley, Jo Jo White, and Bud Stallworth), and he won 23 games or more five times.
Ultimately, the Jayhawks 0-9 record against rivals Kansas State and in his last two seasons, accounting for 30 percent of his losses on those years, contributed heavily to his dismissal.
Still, he kept Kansas in the national spotlight during his seasons with the school, and he enjoyed some terrific successful in building this program.
