The Bad: Secondary

Before this weekend’s game, the Chiefs hadn’t allowed more than 20 points since they played the Bengals in week four. That was Sean Smith‘s first game back from suspension and Cincy destroyed the Chiefs defense that day.

Sunday’s game saw the defense give up 22 points and 10 in the first quarter alone. Sean Smith struggled to cover Sammy Watkins in the first half and allowed him to rack up 158 yards on six receptions with two touchdowns.

The Chiefs defense really looked helpless in the first half of the game, allowing the Bills to score on two of their first three possessions. One of the possessions was a Buffalo fumble, but they were still moving the ball extremely well against what was a stout Chiefs defense.

Tyrod Taylor had himself a day against the Chiefs, passing for just shy of 300 yards, three touchdowns, and completing 21 of his 38 pass attempts.

The Chiefs didn’t have Justin Houston to help put the pressure on the former Virginia Tech quarterback, and it allowed him to have all the time he needed to get the ball out of his hands. Most of the time, it was to Watkins, who was torching the Chiefs’ secondary all first half long.

Marcus Peters looked good as always, but yeah… Smith struggled against Watkins early on.

The positive? Watkins was shut out in the second half.
