Chiefs Rumors: Should Chiefs Pursue Johnny Manziel

facebooktwitterreddit

Rumors have begun that Cleveland Browns’ quarterback Johnny Manziel wants out of Cleveland. Should the Chiefs think about bringing him to KC?

Rumor has it that ex-Texas A&M star Johnny Manziel is looking for his way out of Cleveland. If this is true, should the Kansas City Chiefs look into trading for him in the near future? Their best chance may be as soon as this offseason.

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith posed questions about Manziel’s desire to be with the Browns on his show First Take, which airs on ESPN 2 at 9 AM EST on weekdays. Smith is known for being connected deeply throughout professional sports, mostly the in the NBA, but he breaks NFL stories as well

Referring to Manziel, Smith said, “He’s there because he has to be.” “Maybe he’s acting out of line on purpose so he can get out of Cleveland and go to a bigger city.”

Manziel has been in the news multiple times in the last month, including being involved in a domestic violence issue with his girlfriend. Stephen A. thinks that Johnny is done losing in Cleveland and that he wants to get a fresh start somewhere else.

Should the Chiefs consider trading for him?

My initial thoughts were no, but after thinking about the idea for awhile, I think Manziel could be a breath of fresh air to a franchise that hasn’t had anything but a game-manager for decades at quarterback. Manziel hasn’t yet proved himself in the NFL, but he was drafted by the Browns in the first round in last year’s NFL Draft because he has the vision and the intangibles similar to some of the greats.

In college Johnny Football was by far the most exciting player to watch week in and week out. He has a pretty good arm and also has the speed and athleticism to get out of the pocket and make plays all over the field.

In Cleveland, Manziel has gotten a few chances to start with injuries to the Browns’ starters, but he hasn’t yet been given a shot to be the primary starter. If current starter Alex Smith can’t lead the Chiefs to a playoff berth this season, the Chiefs may be looking for a new guy at quarterback.

Manziel would open up the offense in a why that Alex Smith is capable of, but doesn’t do very often. With weapons like Travis Kelce, De’Anthony Thomas, and Jeremy Maclin on the outsides, Manziel could really flourish.

He’s not afraid to throw the ball down the field, which is something that Smith is often accused of doing. The Chiefs current roster has a lot of speed on the offensive side of the ball, and I could see Manziel being a better fit than Smith.

Trading for Manziel wouldn’t be very expensive from an assets perspective in my opinion. With the trouble he’s been in lately and his lack of breaking out thus far in his NFL career, the price tag could be relatively low. I would set his worth around a 3rd round pick with maybe a player added on depending on how high the Browns still are on Johnny.
