KC Chiefs: Priest Holmes Was Better Than Jamaal Charles

Priest Holmes and Jamaal Charles are arguably the best running backs in Chiefs’ history. So, who’s better?

The Kansas City Chiefs don’t have too many players that are considered to be great players in NFL history, but they have a few. Running backs Jamaal Charles and Priest Holmes definitely fit into that category. The two are considered by most (and rightfully so) to be the best two running backs in Chiefs’ history.

Charles, as we all know, was the current Chiefs starting running back before going down with his second ACL injury of his NFL career. Holmes had his injury problems as well. He had hip injuries, groin injuries, but most notably he had a lot of neck injuries. So much so, that it eventually forced him to retire in 2007.

When he was healthy though, he was an absolute stud for Kansas City. He played for the Chiefs back when they were a legit contender in the AFC, led by quarterback Trent Green, Tony Gonzalez, and Holmes on the offensive side of the ball. He also had probably the best offensive line in Chiefs history for his best seasons in KC.

That being said, I am of the belief that Holmes was the better running back for KC.

Here’s a comparison of the two’s stats in their seasons with the Chiefs:

1. player. 124. Career Chiefs Stats: 65 games, 1,321 carries, 251 receptions, 6,070 rushing yards, 2,377 receiving yards, 83 total touchdowns. RB. Kansas City Chiefs. Priest Holmes

player. 124. Career Chiefs Stats: 100 games, 1,320 carries, 283 receptions, 7,220 rushing yards, 2,443 receiving yards, 62 total touchdowns. RB. Kansas City Chiefs. Jamaal Charles. 2

As you can see, Charles’ career isn’t yet over and he already has 35 more games under his belt playing for the Chiefs, yet their stats are quite similar. Holmes had just one more carry than Charles has had thus far, but he got into the endzone an astounding 21 more times.

Both players are great runningbacks and Charles will for sure join Holmes in the Chiefs Hall of Fame after his career is over.

The two are very different backs. Holmes was more of a powerful force when he ran the ball, able to break as many tackles as he felt was necessary on most plays. Charles, on the other hand, is a quicker running back who relies on he speed and elusiveness to get away from would-be tacklers. He is also a much better receiver than Holmes ever was, but that’s the case with most new-age runningbacks.

Charles is already the all-time leading rusher in Chiefs history, but I also feel like he should be in today’s game where the rules are much stricter on defensive players than they used to be. Holmes took a beating most games, and I firmly believe that’s the only reason he retired after only 10 seasons in the NFL.

Holmes just had a nose for the endzone. He was arguably one of the best fantasy football runningbacks of all time because of how often he seemed to score.

Both players are great runningbacks and Charles will for sure join Holmes in the Chiefs Hall of Fame after his career is over, but so far in his career I don’t think he has yet eclipsed Holmes as the best all-time runningback in Kansas City.
