Chapter 3: Preparing For (Maybe) The Finish
So, here we were, with Game 5 upon us, and a potential World Series victory just nine innings away.
I had done my best to curb extreme, obvious enthusiasm throughout the week, keeping my head down at work and avoiding encounters with buddies who are die-hard Mets fans, or parading down 57th street making Moose calls while draped head to toe in KC apparel.
I ran around equipped with Kansas City socks, sweatshirts, and hats, encountering many Mets fans during this time. I figured if it came down to it, I could just pull a Royals and outrun the enemy.

Game 5 would be different. It would be a solo trek to the stadium to meet the KC crew, and we’d be outnumbered, rubbing elbows with the opposition from the start. I knew deep down, though, that there’s only so much one can say when your team is down 3-1 in a best-of-seven series. No matter the quip, a simple “scoreboard” response can be leveraged by any Kansas City Royals fan.
As I entered the 7 train, “Trap Queen” beginning to play through my headphones for the sixth time since leaving my apartment, I spotted another Midwest native on the far end of the car. We simultaneously held our arms up, fists clenched, and offered each other nods of anxious confidence. And we were off.
