Kansas Jayhawks All-Time Rushing Yards Leaders Number Three: James Sims

There haven’t been many positives in the post-Mark Mangino era for the Jayhawks but James Sims has certainly been one of them.

There wasn’t much that was flashy about Sims but he was a steady performer all four of his seasons at Kansas. He was good in the running game and the passing game. His averages were consistent, not impressive.

  • Rushing Yards – 3,592
  • Carries – 798
  • Rushing Touchdowns – 34
  • Yards per Cary – 4.5
  • Total Yards from Scrimmage – 4,179
  • Total Touchdowns – 36

Sims carried the ball 448 times in his final two seasons and averaged nearly 200 carries a year. He also averaged 19 catches a season. He compiled 1,013 yards rushing in just nine games his junior year.

He finished second in rushing in the Big 12 in both 2012 and 2013 and is the 11th all-time rusher in conference history.

Sims was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Green Bay Packers following the 2014 NFL Draft but never made it onto the regular-season roster.

The Kansas Jayhawks football team only won nine games in Sims’ four seasons on campus, but his consistency and versatility were bright spots in some otherwise dismal years.
