WR Chris Conley

This is a baby step, but it’s a positive moving forward. Rookie receiver Chris Conley gave the Chiefs something they haven’t seen all season: some semblance of a number two wide receiver.

Conley drew a critical defensive holding penalty on 3rd-and-4 to extend a Chiefs drive that resulted in a Jeremy Maclin touchdown. The following drive, Conley caught a 16-yard pass from Alex Smith for a Chiefs first down on a drive that also resulted in a touchdown.

Seems like small potatoes, but Conley played five offensive snaps in Week 1 versus the Texans. He played one offensive snap against the Denver Broncos, and he played 35 offensive snaps against the Packers, one more than receiver Albert Wilson. (via KCChiefs.com)

From NFL.com‘s Mike Clay:

This is nothing against Wilson. This is about the Chiefs showing a willingness to evolve the offense. Wilson so far this season seems to be miscast as an outside, number two receiver. If he played in New England and could run a bunch of short routes in four wide receiver sets, it’s probably a different story. But that’s not the Chiefs offense.

It’s something to watch. Wilson is a good football player, but Conley is a more-gifted athlete and he appears to have earned his chance. This could be a major positive takeaway when we look back at this game.
