Not a butt fumble. No, this was worse. Or better, if you’re a KC Chiefs fan.

The San Diego Chargers clawed back from a 10-point deficit and tied the game at 20 midway through the fourth quarter. Quarterback Philip Rivers would get the ball back at midfield with five minutes remaining.

When the Chiefs got the ball, quarterback Matt Cassel put together a 14-play drive from the Chiefs’ own 19 yard-line, and kicker Ryan Succop walked-off the Chargers with a 30-yard field goal.

The Chargers drove to the Chiefs’ 15 yard-line with 1:03 left in the game, and Kansas City out of timeouts. First-and-10. All that was left was one play to drain the clock, a timeout, and a 30-yard field goal to ice the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

Then it happened. The unthinkable and the unbelievable happened on October 31st. Go figure.

Rivers and the Chargers fumbled the snap. The Chiefs have hope. Then linebacker Andy Studebaker recovered the ball, and the Chiefs had life.  The Chiefs were a dead-man walking, and the Chargers swore they’d just seen a ghost.

On the first Overtime possession, Hali sacked Rivers for an eight-yard loss and forced a 3rd-and-18.

There’s no making that one up. Not just the 14-play Cassel drive. But also the swing of emotion from watching a notoriously smug Philip Rivers (a great quarterback, no doubt) bleed out the Chiefs on Monday Night Football, to a Chiefs’ rally and game-winning drive.

A stroke of luck, but still the stuff of legend.
