4. September 29, 2014; defeated New England Patriots 41-14
The Chiefs would obliterate another eventual Super Bowl champ, this time in Arrowhead Stadium and this time 44 years later.
The crowd was overwhelming, and Tom Brady‘s first five drives ended with a punt. That led to 17 first-half points for the Chiefs: two Jamaal Charles scores and a Cairo Santos field goal as time expired in the second quarter.
Linebacker Tamba Hali‘s sack-fumble in the third quarter gave the Chiefs possession at New England’s nine yard-line, and quarterback Alex Smith found Charles two plays later for Charles’ third touchdown of the game.
Chiefs led 24-0. Then 27-0, and at one point 41-7.
Supposedly it was some poetic wake-up call that turned the Patriots’ season around, but even better was the complete meltdown in Boston following the loss.
From The Boston Globe‘s Shalise Manza Young’s article following the game:
"“We’ve got to play a lot better if we’re going to be a good team and win games,” cocaptain Devin McCourty said. “I’m disappointed; this is the most embarrassing game I’ve ever been a part of. We lost in every aspect. We’ll definitely learn something from this and learn a good amount.”"
It was the second worst defeat (27 points) in the Brady-Belichick era. Then-Patriot Vince Wilfork put it best (via Young’s article):
"“We took one on the chin. They beat us like we stole something.”"
Just a beautiful showing from the Chiefs. Alex Smith finished 20-for-26 for 248 yards and three touchdowns. Charles rushed for 92 yards and running back Knile Davis added 107 rushing yards.
Linebacker Justin Houston posted two sacks and a forced fumble, while cornerback Sean Smith and safety Husain Abdullah each had an interception.
