Thursday, November 1st, 2012 at San Diego Chargers (Chiefs lost 31-13)
Six years after hosting the first ever Thanksgiving primetime game, the Chiefs appeared on Thursday Night Football again! Hooray!
This year, however, the rules for Thursday Night Football had changed. Every team in the league would get to appear on Thursday night at least once in order for everyone to get to enjoy watching their team play… because what’s better than watching a Thursday Night Football game between the Jaguars and the Titans? I mean, really, nothing beats that.
Anyway, as most of you probably remember, the 2012 season was not a fun one for the Chiefs or for their fans. They were awful. They were worse than awful. Watching them play each week nearly brought me to tears and I spent many nights drinking away my sorrows and wondering why I hadn’t become a fan of a better team (and no, my Saints don’t count because they were also terrible that year).

The Chiefs’ appearance on Thursday Night Football in 2012 wasn’t necessary. They lost to the San Diego Chargers in primetime, and it wasn’t enjoyable in the least bit.
I was a senior in college during the 2012 season, and I was spending this lovely evening out with friends. I realized the Chiefs were playing once we got to my friend’s apartment and asked if I could turn the game on. Why? Well, because I’ve been a diehard Chiefs fan since childhood and wanted to watch my team play!
Somehow, some way, I made it through most of this one.
Philip Rivers hit Antonio Gates with a touchdown early in the first quarter and I figured, “Oh boy here we go”, but the Chiefs didn’t just give up. They managed to get a Ryan Succop field goal before half time to make it a 10-3 game.
Succop converted another field goal in the third quarter, bringing the Bolts’ lead to four, but San Diego took off from there. They went on to score three touchdowns, and I threw the remote at my friend’s TV and yelled curse words at her (poor Emily… She didn’t deserve any of that).
While the Chiefs did manage a touchdown in this game (a garbage one mind you), it dropped them to 1-7 on the year, and it was pretty clear by that point that this team was going nowhere.
Fortunately, things got better the following year, for Chiefs fans, for myself, and for my friend. Never again has she invited me over to watch sports though.
