Kansas City was rolling by the time week seven rolled around in 2013. The Chiefs were 6-0, the Royals had barely missed out on the playoffs, and Sporting Kansas City was having one of their best seasons to date (in Wizards and SKC history).

Houston was in the midst of their own struggles, however. The Texans were 2-5 and did not look at all like the team the year prior that made it to the AFC Divisional Round in the playoffs (though they did get blown out in that game, but anyway).

Matt Schaub had been benched in favor of undrafted rookie Case Keenum, which marked yet another rookie quarterback the Chiefs would face in their undefeated run.

Kansas City’s defense led the charge in this one, as the Chiefs only put two touchdowns and a field goal on the board. The touchdowns came from Jamaal Charles and Alex Smith, both rushing scores.

The defense held the Texans to just one touchdown (Keenum to DeAndre Hopkins) and three Randy Bullock field goals.

2013 was a weird season for the Chiefs. They started the season 9-0, but mainly due in part to that stellar defense. Games like this one against the Texans who had a rookie quarterback under center should have been a game that Kansas City dominated in. They won by one point, however, and were able to even the score as far as the KC/Houston series goes.

Kansas City managed to go 11-5 in 2013, but blew a huge lead in the Wildcard game against the Colts. Houston had the worst record in the league that year at 2-14, and owned the first overall pick for the 2014 NFL Draft.
