Eight years ago, the KC Chiefs opened their season against the Houston Texans and did not fare well… at all.
The David Carr era was over in Houston. After going 6-10 the year prior, the Texans decided to move on from Carr, and acquired Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons. Carr was released and never had a starting role in the NFL again.
Schaub, however, fared very well in Houston, especially in his first game in a Texans uniform. He completed 16 of 22 passes for 225 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
The game was scoreless in the second quarter, but a Kris Brown field goal and a Schaub touchdown to Andre Johnson (Schaub’s first touchdown as a Texan) made it a 10-0 game. First overall pick in 2006 Mario Williams added to the Texans’ score when he recovered a fumble 38 yards for a touchdown, making it 17-0 before the Chiefs could do anything offensively.
Justin Medlock (remember him?) missed a 30 yard field goal, but was able to put THREE points on the board in this game. Those three points were all the Chiefs offense could muster up and they ended up losing 20-3 in the first game of the season.
Damon Huard was the starter in this game, as Green was traded to the Miami Dolphins during the off season. Hard went 22 of 33 for 168 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions. It was a less than stellar outing from the Chiefs, but that year was fairly disappointing all together, as they compiled a 4-12 season.
Houston had a better year, notching their first non-losing season with an 8-8 record.
