Derek Carr had a promising rookie season for the Oakland Raiders, and will likely build on that again in his second year in the pros. Carr threw for 3,270 yards and 21 touchdowns to only 12 interceptions in 2014, but the lack of true receivers on his squad really hurt his fantasy value.

This year, Carr will have rookie Amari Cooper and former 49er Michael Crabtree to help him out in the passing game. Those two guys alone should help Carr’s fantasy numbers increase in 2015.

I actually had Carr on my team last year (I played in a league where we had two starting quarterbacks, so we had three total on our team) and he was a decent option for me. At times I was playing him over Alex Smith just due to the fact that he has a better arm and throws the ball deep more often.

I picked Carr up a few weeks into the season when Jake Locker got injured, and he started on my team several times. He was worth the pick up and that was during his rookie season. Unless Carr suffers a sophomore slump this season, I’d imagine he could be a very reliable backup for those of you in one starting quarterback leagues. In two starting quarterback leagues, it’d be a stretch starting him week after week, but it’s not totally out there.

If you’re looking for a quarterback later on in your draft, Derek Carr is a decent route to go. He should be a good bye week guy or injury replacement player for your team.
