The Royals know the Blue Jays pitching staff isn’t very good at the bottom.
The remainder of the Blue Jays starters aren’t very good. Some may point to Marco Estrada as being a threat with his 3.20 ERA, but his 4.74 xFIP ranks fourth worst among eligible pitchers this year.
R.A. Dickey, the 40-year-old knuckleballer, is actually posting the third-worst* xFIP in baseball at 4.75, and his 4.14 ERA is nothing to marvel over.
Much of his success has been driven by an extremely lucky .235 BABIP, which would certainly be challenged by the “contact committee” that makes up the Royals lineup. And after Estrada, it doesn’t get any better.

Sure, one might argue that the ironman Mark Buehrle will be able to handle the postseason well (he’s thrown over 200 innings every year dating back to 2001), but just because the 36-year-old master of command is a workhorse doesn’t mean he’s extremely effective anymore.
*For those wondering, yes, Jeremy Guthrie’s 5.12 xFIP is at the very bottom of the pile.
