Alex Smith is one of the few starting QBs in the NFL that wasn’t worth owning in a standard 12-team fantasy football league last year. That being said, I think that this year is going to be the opposite this year.

I see Smith excelling with some of his new and developing weapons that he has in the Chiefs’ offense headlining new wide out Jeremy Maclin who was acquired via free agency and also including guys like Travis Kelce, De’Anthony Thomas, Albert Wilson, and rookie Chris Conley.

Smith normally doesn’t like to take chances and throw the ball deep down the field, and has been labeled a “game manager” by most rather than the exciting gun-slinging mentality that a lot of the greats in the game today possess (think Peyton Manning and Matthew Stafford).

This keeps his fantasy value down because he doesn’t normally throw for 300+ yards a game with multiple touchdowns, but I think with another year in this offense and the potential progression of the players around him, I think Alex could end up being a very good backup fantasy QB and a good matchup play.

Consider drafting him in the latter rounds of your draft as he is ranked a lot lower in most rankings and probably will be available into the last two or so rounds.
