Solid fantasy football tight ends can sometimes be the difference makers in close match ups.

In some ways, targeting and drafting tight ends can be a lot like finding a quarterback. There’s usually an extremely obvious top tier, and then after that, you’re usually better off waiting until the middle rounds to draft someone serviceable.

One difference, however, is that there seems to be a lot more uncertainty to tight ends each year. They can return to peak form (think Antonio Gates last year), seemingly come out of nowhere (Julius Thomas in 2013), end up sharing snaps (Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen in Indianapolis), or have entire careers as “potential breakout stars” (Brandon Pettigrew and Kyle Rudolph come to mind).

Unfortunately, if you don’t have one of the top tier guys or a Mr. Consistent, it’s easy to see a lot of goose eggs from your tight end fantasy slot each week. In other words, it can be a real crap shoot. If you can find a breakout star or an aging vet that puts together a great year, however, you can rise above the weak ones in the league and find success.

A lot will happen once the year begins, but we have to start somewhere. Regardless of whether you’re looking to commit early, take a flier later on, or find someone safe and serviceable, here are the top 15 tight ends to target on draft day.
