(3) 2000 KC Wiz vs. (6) 1921-22 Kansas Basketball
It’s a battle of champions in this match-up as the KC Wiz won the franchise’s first championship in 2000, and the Jayhawks won their first title, albeit one the NCAA does not recognize because it did not exist like it does today nearly 100 years later.
Goal keeper Tony Meola and defender Peter Vermes were nearly unstoppable, winning MLS player of the year awards for their respective positions.
Head coach Phog Allen and the ‘Hawks were pretty unstoppable as well, winning 16 of their 18 games and the Helms National Championship.
Both teams won their opening rounds match-ups with nearly 2/3 of the vote. Despite both dominating in the first round, only one will be a member of the Sweet 16.
