(1) 1987-88 Kansas Basketball vs. (16) 2011 Sporting KC
Sporting KC is all the rage lately, and for good reason. Ever since re-branding in 2011 with the EPL feel, the soccer team has captured Kansas City fans’ hearts.
That season the squad had to play its first 10 games on the road because Sporting Park was not ready. They won only one of those games. However, the team bounced back to finish first in the Eastern Conference (13-9-12), and defeated Colorado 4-0 in the Conference Semis.
The season ended in the Conference Finals with a loss to the Houston Dynamo, but it was a memorable season for sure. Matt Besler and Omar Bravo were named all-stars, while Graham Zusi earned the June Player of the Month award.
Speaking of memories, the ’87-88 KU basketball team made a few. Despite entering the NCAA Tournament as a six seed, Danny and the Miracles, led by Kansas legend Danny Manning, fought their way to the NCAA Title game.
Once there, they defeated Big 12 Conference foe Oklahoma, 83-79, despite losing to them twice during the regular season. Manning was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player as the Jayhawks won their second national championship.
