(3) 1966 KC Chiefs vs. (14) 1963-64 Kansas State Basketball
Of course the 1966 Kansas City Chiefs’ season could have ended better, but not much. In just its fourth season of existence, Kansas City played in the first Super Bowl, losing to Green Bay, 35-10.
Quarterback Len Dawson led the team to an 11-2-1 record and a win over Buffalo in the AFL Championship game.
Like Kansas City, the Wildcats benefited from a smaller playoff pool, as the NCAA Tournament only took four wins instead of six in today’s version.
However, that also meant K-State had to be one of the top 16 teams in the land to qualify, and it was. The 22-6 Wildcats, made their fourth (and last) Final Four appearance in 16 seasons.
While they would eventually lose to UCLA in the Semifinals and Michigan in the third-place game, what made this year special was an Elite 8 victory over a perceived “better” Wichita State squad.
