Royals VS Rays: July 9th at Kauffman Stadium (Royals won 8-3)
A day after Alex Gordon was injured and put on the disabled list, the Royals went out and played their fourth game against the Tampa Bay Rays. It was a day game that saw 32,308 fans attending the K on a Thursday afternoon, and those fans wouldn’t regret skipping work.
The Royals struck first in the very first inning when Eric Hosmer doubled to score Alcides Escobar, and Lorenzo Cain later homered to give the boys in blue a 3-0 lead early on. Rookie Cheslor Cuthbert tacked on another run (and his first career RBI) to make it a 4-0 Royals lead.
Yordano Ventura was making his first start in nearly a month, and started to falter in the fifth inning. Ventura ended up giving up three runs in the fifth, and it was only a one-run lead for Kansas City.
The Royals did not relinquish the lead, however, as they immediately got back those three runs in the bottom of that same inning. After a Kendrys Morales sac fly and a Salvador Perez home run, it was 7-3 Royals. The final score ended up as 8-3, with Cuthbert getting his second career RBI for the other run.
This game against the Rays meant a lot to the fans because it showed that the Kansas City Royals can still win ball games without Alex Gordon. Jarrod Dyson had the play of the day on defense, when he had a crazy catch and threw out a runner on a crazy double play that had to make Gordo smile.
The Royals completed their four-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays with this win. Somehow though, this still isn’t the best game of this series.
