Royals VS White Sox: April 6th at Kauffman Stadium (Royals won 10-1)

After an impressive 2014 season that saw our beloved Kansas City Royals making it all the way to Game 7 of the World Series, fans couldn’t wait for a true opening day at the K. I was one of those fans, as I attended my second straight opening day with my dad and my brother.

We made sure to get to the game early with all of the American League champion festivities going on. We saw the American League champ flag get raised, the players receive their rings, and overall got to relive that magical month all over again with some of KC’s biggest fans.

With all of that said though, there was still a game to be played at Kauffman Stadium, and boy was it a fun one!

Yordano Ventura was named the opening day starter against Chicago’s Jeff Samardzija (Chris Sale was injured and couldn’t start). Ventura went on to only allow one earned run while the Royals completely dominated on offense.

  • Mike Moustakas hit the first Royals home run of the year to make it a 4-0 game in the bottom of the fifth. Immediately after, Lorenzo Cain was beaned by a pitch by Samardzija (we’ll get to this in a later game) and Samardzija was not ejected despite it clearly being on purpose.

Ventura pitched into the seventh inning, but was pulled after giving up a home run to Jose Abreu, and after going down with what later was revealed as a thumb cramp (Source: Matthew DeFranks of Fox Sports).

The Royals put things away in the bottom of the seventh inning when they were able to put up five runs. Three of those runs were thanks to an Alex Rios home run (his only one of the season), and the Royals ended the day plating ten runs in their first game and first victory of the 2015 season.

The Royals went on to sweep the White Sox in a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium.

There will be another White Sox game included right after this one so I won’t get into some stuff you might feel I’m leaving out regarding Samardzija. This game put the Royals on track to start the season 7-0 and it was an opening day fans won’t forget.

Now as for that next series with the White Sox…
