Ryan Madson was one of the best signings for Dayton Moore and the Kansas City Royals this off season, as he’s basically been the fourth addition of the famous H-D-H Trio (M-H-D-H?).

Let’s start with the beginning of Madson’s career.

Madson has always been a good reliever and spent most of his major league career as a member of the Phillies. He was on the 2008 World Series Phillies squad with current Royals teammate Joe Blanton.

Madson saw some as the Phillies’ closer during the 2009 and 2010 seasons and likely would have continued to dominate as a closer in the MLB, but Tommy John surgery led to Madson not playing for three full seasons.

I feel like a record by continuously saying this, but Madson was a huge risk. Not pitching for three full seasons could have really affected Madson as a reliever in the Royals’ bullpen, but the dude has been on fire.

Madson (as of June 21st) has pitched 28.1 innings of relief in 28 games and has only allowed six runs during that span. He currently posts a 1.91 ERA and has looked incredible this season. Not bad for a guy who was out of the majors for three full seasons . Moore took a chance on Madson and the risk has definitely paid off. H-D-H agrees.
