Does Ben Grubbs not have the perfect name for a barbecue sauce? Ben Grubbs sounds like he’s been making barbecue sauce since Rufus Teague was a boy. I’m assuming I’ll bump into Grubbs at Joe’s, Gates, Bryant’s or the Stack at some point this year, so I’ll pitch the idea.

Grubbs is old school, he’s smart, his job is boring. He’s been the same guy for 8 seasons.

You might be thinking: why are you telling me Ben Grubbs is “underrated”? Isn’t he the 31-year-old guard who’s a solid lineman but no Will Shields? Don’t we have a pretty good idea of what Grubbs is at this point in his career?

That’s true and that’s the reason Ben Gru66s (he’s worn No. 66 his entire career) is underrated for the Kansas City Chiefs: (1) reasonable price, (2) for a known commodity, (3) at a position of need. Nice value play by the Chiefs.

Grubbs is old school, he’s smart, his job is boring. He’s been the same guy for 8 seasons. Ho-hum. So be it. Albeit. Whatever that word even means. Anyway…

There’s no value you can put on having a guy like Grubbs in the room, especially an offensive line room full of young and inexperienced players. Although, the script is flipped for now, as Grubbs said he’s leaning heavily on Eric Kush and Eric Fisher to help him learn the playbook. He’s played in 133 NFL games. He’s started 11 playoff games. He’s a two-time Pro Bowl selection (2011, 2013) and was a standout player at Auburn University. He’s been playing big-time football his entire life and has been a part of successful NFL offenses.

Grubbs is exactly what the Chiefs needed to add to the offensive line. A consistent, dependable veteran who knows what to do and where to be – and as a result, doesn’t commit penalties. He’s been considered an upper-tier offensive guard for several years, and the Chiefs swooped him from New Orleans for a fifth-round pick.

This low-risk, high-reward situation makes Grubbs an underrated asset for the 2015 Chiefs.
