  • It hadn’t been a full inning, and thanks to a Brandon Moss home run that just landed, the Kansas City Royals already trailed in their first playoff game in nearly three decades.

    I sat in my seat, about 100 rows up behind first base with a group of friends, deflated, despite the fact not one Royal had stepped to the plate.

    With one giant swing of a bat, a surreal feeling that it was September 30 and we were at a Royals game in Kauffman Stadium, had been replaced with the same ‘ol “here we go again” attitude of the past 29 years.

    You see, heading in to the game I had convinced myself James Shields was Greg Maddux in his prime. I knew he wasn’t, but the attitude and confidence he carried to the mound had me sure he would best Jon Lester and the Oakland A’s.
