Kansas Jayhawks: Remembering Big 12 Titles From Bill Self Era

With the Kansas Jayhawks‘ overtime victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers, the Jayhawks were able to capture their 11th straight regular season Big 12 Championship. This win ties Gonzaga’s streak at 11 titles and is only two away from matching the record of 13 set by the UCLA Bruins from 1967-1979.
This impressive streak dates all the way back to coach Bill Self’s second year with the Jayhawks. His first season saw the Jayhawks taking second place.
What I find extremely impressive about this streak is that the Big 12 conference has had tons of great players within it, including the likes of Blake Griffin and Kevin Durant.
Each year that it seems as though the Jayhawks are rebuilding and may have to take the back seat, Self finds a way to pull the team together to win another conference championship.
How does a team accomplish such a feat? Well having one of the best venues to play in certainly helps along with an incredible fan base. Having this advantage makes KU next to impossible to defeat at home. In fact in his entire time at KU, Bill Self has never been swept by a conference rival.
At Allen Fieldhouse, Self boasts an amazing record of 186-9. The Jayhawks are on top year after year because teams just can’t seem to find a way to win at Allen Fieldhouse. Only a handful of teams have been able to enter “the Phog” and emerge as the victors.
Since I’m an avid Kansas Jayhawk fan, I decided to give some of the older fans a chance to experience nostalgia. Here is a look back at each of the 11 seasons that the Kansas Jayhawks have either won outright or have won a share of the regular season Big 12 conference championship.
