Kansas City Chiefs: Ten Free Agents To Avoid

Wes Welker – Wide Receiver
In his prime, Wes Welker was arguably the best slot receiver in the NFL. I can’t even think of how many times I watched Tom Brady throw a little checkdown route to Welker and instead of going down in about five yards, Welker would turn it into a 30-yard touchdown.
Even in his first season with the Broncos he was a dynamic piece to the Broncos’ offense. Unfortunately, there are some issues that have made him unattractive to me.
First, there’s the issue of Welker battling concussions in the last two seasons. He’s had three confirmed concussions in two seasons with the Broncos. Now I’ve only had one concussion in my life but I know that concussions are serious injuries.
The fact that Welker has had three of them in only two seasons is unnerving. I understand that if he were to miraculously come to Kansas City he would only sign a one or two-year deal, but we’re already strapped for cash as it is and Welker may require a decent sized payout.
The second issue that bothers me is that he is on his decline. While he saw a fair amount of playing time this last season with the Broncos, his spot as a consistent piece in the offense was taken by Emmanuel Sanders.
His stat line suffered massively from his limited time as well. In the 2013 season, Welker started all 13 games he played in and caught 73 passes for 778 yards and ten touchdowns. Fast forward a year later and his catches/yardage/touchdowns stat line in 14 games he played in was 49/464/2, respectively.
I’m not saying Welker couldn’t be a contributor in the KC Chiefs’ offense. I just think there are better receivers out there to grab instead of him.
