What I think happened in August is that Alex Gordon was swept up in the AL Central race, and the increasing probability that the Royals were going to make the postseason. Everything is golden when you’re winning, and I’m sure that played into why the normally muted Gordon was so pointed and convincing with regard to his plans to pick up the 2016 player option.

Regardless of your emotional attachment to a player, and/or your belief in hometown discounts or the perceived benevolence of a professional athlete, IT’S ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY.

Now that the dust has settled from a crushing World Series defeat, Gordon has had ample time to sit back and reflect on those overzealous comments. More likely, his agent has had ample time to get in touch with Gordon, and implore him to pump the brakes on those types of comments.

As foolish as it was to make those comments back in August, it’s equally as smart to announce an about-face now. He’s doing what any other ball player would do, and looking out for his best interest.

Regardless of your emotional attachment to a player, and/or your belief in hometown discounts or the perceived benevolence of a professional athlete, IT’S ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY.

That’s not a knock on Alex Gordon, it’s just a fact of life in professional sports. The difference here being that I don’t think Gordon is necessarily looking to shatter records with what is sure to be a hefty pay raise.

More so, I think Gordon is looking for an enhanced long-term commitment from the Royals.
