Like the players at nine and ten on this list, Jamie Quirk was basically a back-up his whole career. He played 18 seasons in the majors, including 11 with the Royals, in three different stints, and only played in 984 total games.
Quirk had 1,508 total plate appearances in his 11 seasons with Kansas City. In 1987 Quirk played in 109 games, and went to the plate 334 times. It was the only time in his career he played more than 100 games or had more than 300 plate appearances, in any uniform.
- Sixth in Home Runs – 30
- Eighth in Runs Scored – 126
- Eighth in Runs Batted In – 157
- Sixth (t) in Stolen Bases – 5
- Seventh in Batting Average – .245
- Seventh in On base Percentage – .300
- Seventh in Slugging Percentage – .364
- Eighth in Wins Above Replacement – 2.1
Brent Mayne and Jamie Quirk were pretty much a toss up, but the the latter got the slightly higher ranking basically due to his many years as a Royals, and the fact his WAR was higher.
Quirk averaged a measly .2 WAR per season, but that was all Mayne was able to accumulate, despite quite a bit more playing time. For those who remember the Royals’ heydays, they will fondly remember Quirk as being part of those great teams.
