WOULD RUSSELL WILSON HAVE EVEN PLAYED?

In short, that’s a yes.

The Chiefs went 2-14 in what would have been Wilson’s rookie year in 2012. Embattled coach Romeo Crennel benched starting quarterback Matt Cassel week 10 against the Cincinnati Bengals for poor play.

Cassel also suffered a concussion week five against Baltimore. This injury ended up becoming rather notable when RT Eric Winston blew up after the game with a long rant about fans cheering Cassel’s injury.

In the end Brady Quinn ended up starting 8 games for the Chiefs that season.

Given that Russell Wilson beat out Matt Flynn in Seattle after the Seahawks had brought Flynn from Green Bay intending to make him the starter, I can’t imagine that Brady Quinn would have kept Wilson on the bench.

I have no doubt that Chiefs Lord and Master Scott Pioli would have pressured Crennel to start the season with Matt Cassel under center. But when Cassel proved yet again that he’s not NFL starter material, I have to think that Russell Wilson would have gotten the call.

By week 10, the KC Chiefs were 1-9 and the season was already lost. The fan movement “Save Our Chiefs” was already in full swing and Scott Pioli and Romeo Crennel had to know their jobs were in jeopardy. Unveiling a new young quarterback might have been the only way to save their jobs.

Yeah, Russell Wilson would have played.
