Round 2, Pick 17
With the injury sustained by Derrick Johnson, and nobody stepping up to fill his role or even solidifying themselves as the second inside linebacker, the Chiefs desperately need someone not only for next year, but for the future.
Nobody knows how Johnson will rebound from his injury, but the Chiefs would feel a lot more comfortable with Denzel Perryman stacking the box next to him. Perryman is known as a thumper, and there is video evidence to back those claims.
"He’s difficult to latch onto at the second level due to strong, active hands, agile feet and good use of leverage when taking on bigger blockers, and he exhibits good burst and solid angles to either sideline when asked to pursue plays on the edges. Good lower-body flexibility to sprawl or dead-leg would-be blockers, slipping by them. -Courtesy of Derek Stephens, Rob Rang of CBS Sports"
Perryman’s weakness is the fact that he is a bit undersized coming in at only 5-11. He never let his size slow him down in college, but it is certainly something to watch at the professional level.
Perryman had a decorated college career earning 2013 Team Defensive MVP, 2013 Team Hard Hitter, 2013 All-ACC, 2014 Butkus Award Finalist, 2014 All-America 3rd Team awards.
