Saturday Blitz
This game with Baylor is a whole 180 degrees from the Jayhawks though. The Wildcats know that if they can knock off the Bears that they are looking at pretty good January game possibly a BCS berth, maybe.
The last two trips to Waco have been a disaster including the one where K-State was in position to go to the National title game a few years ago, but got hammered. Despite a crushing blow against TCU two and half weeks ago, the Cats are in a good position. K-State knows it will have to play it best game of the season all the way around to knock off the Bears to clinch a share of the Big 12 title with TCU.
Everyone around the nation has TCU and Baylor locks to win the conference. On the flip side though, Kansas State has a chance for redemption with the whole world watching.
Here are some things to look for on Saturday night.
1) Time of Possession
One of the reasons why K-State nearly beat Baylor last season was because they kept the ball away from the explosive Baylor offense and made plays of their own. Converting third downs is vital as well. Jake Waters and company will need to do the same thing on Saturday and make sure they keep the Baylor offense on the bench as long as possible.
2) Limit Big Plays
The Wildcats let the game in Manhattan get away last year by allowing huge plays against the Bears. Two of them were because of Bryce Petty’s arm. The defense for K-State must keep everything in front of them and make Baylor earn every yard
3) The Play of Jake Waters
Jake Waters came to Kansas State with the opportunity to play in these type of games. Here’s another chance and most likely his final opportunity to play for a conference title. Waters has played very well this season and will need a performance like he did on the road against Iowa State earlier this season. Waters cannot afford to play like he did few weeks ago on the road at TCU or KSU will be screwed.
X-Factor
I’m going with Curry Sexton.
Tyler Lockett has had an remarkable season, but it has been the emergence of Sexton that has this Kansas State offense in a different tune. Sexton is coming off a 9 catch, 141 yards and one touchdown game against Kansas. Baylor gave up a ton of yardage last week vs. Texas Tech so Sexton will have a chance to make some key plays.
