Kansas State knew that these stretch of games to end the season was going to be really tough. A week and a half ago though, K-State did not show up to play against TCU. Nothing was working right.
Now, the next chapter to the season is almost here.
The Wildcats travel to a loud environment where the Mountaineers play very well and with a lot of confidence. K-State has had the same amount of time as West Virginia, as they both are coming off bye weeks.
Kansas State needs to come out of the gate with a little bit more intensity if they’re going to go up to Morgantown to a win. Here are five things to look for on Thursday night against West Virginia.
First Quarter Success
The Wildcats have had some issues getting off to good starts in games this season. This is very important once again to make plays on both sides of the ball and to start fast and not fall behind early. If K-State can do that, they can take a big step forward setting the tone throughout this game.
Contain Kevin White
Slow this dude down. That is the task at hand for the Wildcat defense this week especially getting beat with the long ball. K-State must at least contain him to some degree. If the Cats give up big plays it’s going to be a long evening.
Run the ball
Bill Snyder mentioned after the TCU game that they did not run the ball enough. Somehow, the Cats will need to run the football and keep the potent West Virginia offense on the sidelines. DeMarcus Robinson, Charles Jones, and even Jake Waters need to get this going early and often.
Take the crowd out
This is something that K-State did not do against TCU. If the defense shows up and makes big plays against the Mountaineer offense, it will be important for the Wildcats to do all of those things above to have any chance to stay in the Big 12 race, which is a slim one at this point.
KSU defense needs to show up
K-State’s defense clearly didn’t come to play against TCU and allowed them to run wild, and make plays through the air. Jonathan Truman and company need to bring their A game right from the get go.
Kansas State’s defense can’t allow White, Clint Trickett, and Wendell Smallwood to have big games especially at night in front of a West Virginia crowd.
K-State needs to be more sound like they have been all season before their TCU collapse.
