Frank Mason will be the front runner going into the season. He is the most experienced, and he brings a toughness to the position. There is a good chance he is the best defender of this group as well.
Mason showed a great ability to drive the lane and get to the basket as a freshman. Unfortunately, he was not good at finishing at the rim, getting knocked off balance more often than not.
He was successful on just 41.7% of his field goal attempts as a freshman, and he shot just 32.7% from behind the arc.
With an off-season to get stronger, there is hope he can improve in this area. Still, he isn’t very tall, and that may hinder him in getting balls to drop through the hoop in traffic. He is listed at 5’11”, and that may be generous.
Mason also needs to improve his shooting eye. He was successful on just 41.7% of his field goal attempts as a freshman, and he shot just 32.7% from behind the arc. Those numbers need to improve.
Mason has to be considered the favorite to be the starting point guard for the Kansas Jayhawks this season. He is tough, and strong. It is easy to envision him as an above average college point guard.
There is some good upside to Frank Mason as a player. Look for him to take a big step forward in his second year in the system.
