Defensive Backs. 1. player. 124. . .

We are going to throw the corner backs and safeties all together on this one because there is such a hodge podge of players, some probably will see time at both.

Pro Bowler Brandon Flowers is gone. Who knows if he really didn’t fit Reid’s and Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton’s scheme, or if he was too small, or if his knee was too tricky to chance, or if it was strictly a financial decision.

As poorly as the Chiefs secondary played late last season, it is frightening they just let their best corner back go.

As poorly as the Chiefs secondary played late last season, it is frightening they just let their best corner back go. They just cut him. Who is going to replace him?

Sean Smith played well at times in 2013 but not consistently. Chris Owens? He is a career back-up. Phillip Gaines? It is tough to trust a rookie corner to be a starter. Marcus Cooper? Maybe. He looked very good early but was exposed horribly in the second half of the season.

The safeties should be better. Eric Berry is the leader in the defensive back field. Husain Abdullah, who has experience at corner and safety, or Sanders Commings, will most likely play opposite Berry.

The safeties seem to be more promising than the corners but that may be negated because of Sutton’s crazy, constant pass rush scheme.

Too often, the pass rush includes bringing a safety, usually Berry, and that tends to leave the corners in single man-to-man coverage, and that is really tough to play in the NFL every down, for most corner backs.

The Chiefs face a couple of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the league twice in Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers. If anyone can expose this secondary, it will be these two, and it will be in games that count.

Let’s hope the Chiefs aren’t giving away 4 games to divisional rivals before the season even starts.
