THE YOUNG GUN: KELLY OUBRE
Bill Self loves his young guns. Last year, he started three freshmen for a good chunk of the year, for better or worse. This year’s athletic shooting guard/small forward slasher type is Kelly Oubre.
Oubre committed to Kansas early for this season, and he has not been a disappointment as a recruit.
He is another long athletic type, standing 6’7″ and weighing 200 pounds, that Self loves to play at the third guard spot. He has a wing span of 7’1″, which can help him wreak havoc on defense.
Oubre’s play throughout the season pushed him into the top ten for recruits. He finished as the 6th best recruit by Rivals.com for the season. He has some big shoes to fill of he is going to take over for the departed Andrew Wiggins next season.
He is a do-it-all offensive player as he averaged 22.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game in his senior year of prep ball. If Kelly Oubre can play lock down, disruptive defense, he will be hard to beat out for the second off guard starting spot.
Most likely, the starting nod will go to either Oubre or Brannen Greene, and they are of similar size. If one can get to the rim more easily, and play better defense than the other, those will probably be the deciding factors.
