 Philadelphia Phillies: Marlon Byrd

Byrd was a guy that many Royals fans wanted this offseason.  He was coming off a career year at the age of 35, and appeared to be the kind of big’ish bat the Royals needed in the middle of their order.  Ultimately, Byrd signed very early in the off-season with the Phillies.

The Phillies are floundering, and are likely considering a fire-sale of their own.  They’re currently on the hook for $8 million/year for through 2016.  There’s no doubt they’d like to get out from under that contract, and unfortunately for them, that won’t be easy because Byrd isn’t quite performing as well as he did last year.

That being the case, the Royals could be an attractive suitor as they could benefit from his home run power, and his ability to hold down right field.  The catch here is that the Royals aren’t likely to pay that kind of money for Byrd.

To make this deal happen, the Phillies would have to kick in significant cash.  Additionally, if the Phillies hope to get anything more than a lottery ticket for Byrd, they’ll really have to kick in some serious dollars.
